Department of Neurology Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, celebrated National Epilepsy Day on 17th Nov. 2012.

which was extended as epilepsy week till 24th November. Various events were organized in the department and in the city to create awareness about epilepsy amongst patients and the public. A group of Students ( Vipin Jha, Madhu Bhagat, Rakesh Kumar and Mohammad Raahim Rafi) who were doing Post Graduate Diploma in TV Journalism and street theater experience from Jamia University, New Delhi were invited to present stage street plays. They presented the play at various places in DMC Hospital at various outdoor patient department areas and reception. In the Ludhiana City also they performed at two different places in the market and at the bus stand. They touched on the various social and sensitive issues related with epilepsy like problems which children with epilepsy face at their schools. In a dramatized way, they showed about the mental trauma females have to undergo at the time of their marriage and planning pregnancy. They also educated people regarding various myths related to epilepsy and its treatment. A press conference was held in the department which was attended of epileplogist, epilepsy surgeon, electrophysiologist, epilepsy nurses, dietician and other neurologists. Dr. Gagandeep Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Neurology, highlighted about the general aspects of epilepsy and its treatment. Epilepsy surgeon/ Dr. Ashwani Chaudhary discussed about the surgical aspects of epilepsy and its related issues. Chief dietician/ Dr. Ritu Shudhakar highlighted the role of Ketogenic diet in cases of refractory epilepsy in children and its results. Therefore awareness was created amongst public through media and distributing education material to patients and their relatives in the form of pamphlets during this week.
