NELLORE CHAPTER NATIONAL EPILEPSY DAY CELEBRATIONS -2013

National epilepsy day celebration was celebrated by Nellore chapter. Keeping in theme with Epilepsy care givers the events were organized. Several functions were organized over 2 months to spread awareness. Main function was organized in the local town. Patients along with their care givers were invited. General public, school and college students and teachers were given invitation cards. District collector Sree N Sreekant inaugurated the function. President Dr Bindu Menon gave the inaugural address and briefed all regarding the development in epilepsy treatment and stressed that epilepsy is no longer an illness with stigma. Shree Sreekant district collector applauded the association for the regular activities being held and informed the public that seeing the posters displayed in town by the association he is also amazed to know that many great men suffered from epilepsy. He spoke to the patients and care givers that the disease has seen a new light and is as common as any other ailment. Prize distribution was conducted for all the competitions held. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and consolation prizes were distributed for the drawing and essay competition held in various schools and colleges.

A poster prevent cerebral palsy- prevent epilepsy was released by the district collector. 1000 posters were made and with the help of District Medical Health officer it was distributed to 75 primary health centers, 15 community health centers, 10 urban health centers, and 3 area hospitals. Apart from that the same was distributed in various clinics and private hospitals. Posters were given to the child and welfare section. The program began with the association members performing a skit. The skit included a person having epilepsy and later his journey through epilepsy. The members had practiced for the skit for about a month. The skit was highly appreciated and a huge appreciation for the members is in order.

A cultural program for the public was also organized which included mimicry and magic show. They were Few differently abled and epilepsy patients performed during the function. Pamphlets regarding epilepsy and its information were distributed to all during the function. The function was a huge success with over 500 attendances. Refreshments were served during the function. A free epilepsy camp was held and over 80 patients were given free medication. Painting competition was held for children with epilepsy. 35 children attended the competition. All were given gifts and prize winners were given prizes during the function.

Painting and essay competition were held in schools and colleges. (Swami doss school, Narayana school, New Netaji School, Z P School, Srinivas Junior college, Kasturi Devi School) participated in the programme and the association thanks the principal and the staff for their whole hearted support. The enthusiasm of the students was excellent. The topic for essay was ‘My friend has epilepsy’. This year we received requests from other schools also expressing their desire to participate in such activities next year. The association has noted this and will make it in a larger scale next time.

Awareness programs were held in 3 schools where they were briefed about epilepsy and an interaction was done later. Regular school programmes are held. This month 4 schools were given awareness programmes. (LL Flower School, Ved Vyasa School, Govt girl’s high school, ESRM High school). A medical camp was also held in the Govt girl’s high school. Few students who had neurological ailment were examined along with their guardians and were given advice. The school programs have been a great success. With the questionnaire students we an idea of the awareness level and it also helps us to focus on the areas of awareness. Students are very enthusiastic and come out with lots of doubts. The association continues to have awareness programmes and medical camps all through the year. Association thanks all the members for their whole hearted support during all year activities.

NELLORE CHAPTER NATIONAL EPILEPSY DAY CELEBRATIONS -2012

Nellore chapter celebrated the Epilepsy day celebrations for a whole month. National epilepsy day was celebrated on 17th Nov 2012. The theme for this year was epilepsy and empowerment. A project which was sent to International Bureau for Epilepsy under the promising strategy programme from the Nellore chapter has been approved. 5 persons with epilepsy will be taught cell phone repair and then given the basic infrastructure for their livelihood. Advertisements regarding the same were put in the local newspapers. Press meeting was also organized.

Another theme 'PREVENT HEAD INJURY - PREVENT EPILEPSY' was propagated on the day. Flexes depicting follow traffic rules, use of seat belts while driving, avoid drink and drive, don't use cell phone and wear helmet while riding two wheelers were placed in strategic locations. The Epilepsy Association Nellore chapter members, students, well wishers all joined the campaign. Hon. Member of parliament MR. Mekapatti Rajmohan Reddy flagged the rally. Around 130 people on two wheeler with helmet participated in the rally. Hon. MP along with members walked the whole distance. The concept and the event were covered by all local news channel and local news papers.

A painting competition was held in the primary school where the same posters were depicted Essay competition with the topic my Nellore city - my vision of an accident free city was conducted in 3 junior colleges. Students participated with enthusiasm bringing out their own views of the topic.

Free epilepsy camps with distribution of medication were held in 3 places. The first camp was conducted in the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation Campus. The function was attended by DSP Mr. L Chencu Reddy, Executive Director Mr. Surya Chandra Rao, Regional manager Mr. N Kumariah, Medical officer Dr Manorama. They extended a warm welcome and expressed their thanks as most patients are unable to attend as hospital outpatients due to lack of leave. The camp was attended by more than 80 patients. Another free medical camp in the outskirts of Nellore was held on 18th Nov 2012. 90 patients attended the camp. Medications and counseling was given to all. A camp was held in special school for mentally challenged (Pragathi charities). Epilepsy was seen in 10% of children. The majority were hypoxic brain damage. The association will be doing free monthly camp in the charity.

An awareness and education programme was conducted for the medical officers, nursing supervisors, ANM's. A total of 200 delegated attended the programmes. The programme was a great success with an excellent interaction for more than half hour after the talk by Dr Bindu Menon. Further programmes in special schools and rural areas are being planned for the coming months.

NATIONAL EPILEPSY DAY CELEBRATIONS -2011

Nellore chapter celebrated the National epilepsy day over a period of 1 month. The functions started with Prof M M Mehndiratta giving a guest lecture on ‘Clinical and Video based approach to Epilepsy’. The meeting was attended by around 200 delegates and was highly appreciated.

On national epilepsy day, a major function was conducted in the college auditorium. The main highlights of the function were release of a 24 page comic to be released to school children by the chief guest of the function Mr. M Sridhar Krishna Reddy, MLA, Nellore City. The comic depicts the usual pattern of epilepsy myths and information regarding the disease is highlighted. 3000 copies of the comic will be distributed. The comic which is in the local language will be henceforth distributed during all school and educational programmes. Neurocysticercosis is a preventable form of epilepsy. The awareness programmes need to start at the core of the society. A poster and a sticker regarding prevention of epilepsy by preventing tapeworms have been made by the chapter. During NED they were released by Dr K. Masilamani, District Medical health officer, Guest of honor. Both the poster and sticker shows in a diagrammatic form how to prevent NCC. Every picture of the comic art, pictures of the poster and sticker has been drawn by Mr S. Pani, an artist after the whole idea was told to him. The awareness progarmmes has been discussed at the collector office and they have applauded and joined hands for officially helping to display the posters and stickers. The areas of interest would be schools, colleges, hostels, PHC, UHC, hospitals, reservations centers, bus stops, railway station etc. The national epilepsy programme was attended by approx 600 people; patients, relatives, general public, physicians, registered practioners, and students. Snacks and refreshments were served for all. The regular school/college awareness programmes were continued. The chapter has covered over 2000 children till date. Active interactive sessions are held. An essay competition and drawing competition was held. Three winners from each competition were given prizes on national epilepsy by the chief guests. A drawing competition for children with epilepsy was held in the outpatient complex. Children with epilepsy from the registry were telephonic informed. 30 children participated, all were distributed gifts and winners were given prizes. Regular epilepsy camps are being held by the chapter where consultation and free medicines are distributed. Camps are conducted in the outer of the city in different areas where prior information through pamphlets and loudspeaker announcement is done. Around 40 patients attend the camps.

Nellore town has a Red Cross society with a rehabilitation center for spastic and cerebral palsy children. A coloring competition for spastic children at the Red Cross was held and prizes for the winners were distributed. Subsequently a free medical camp was held, Epilepsy was seen in 40% of spastic children. Deputy collector Mr. Gaur attended the program. All activities were duly covered by the media. An article about epilepsy was written in the local newspaper Sakshi. A television interview for half an hour about all aspects of epilepsy was also aired on 2 days consecutively in the local CAN channel. Both programmes were well taken by the public judging from the response.

A CME program with Dr K P Vinayan Pediatric neurologist from Kochi was conducted which was attended by over 70 doctors. There was further good interaction with students and faculty. A further CME programme with the pediatric society of India Nellore branch was also well attended.

Nellore chapter will continue such through the year.

Nellore chapter actively celebrated the National epilepsy day. Keeping in view the theme based awareness for National Epilepsy Day, the chapter focused on the prevention of Epilepsy. November 9- November 16th was kept as Epilepsy prevention awareness week. On these days the booklet send to the Nellore chapter was distributed to all and they were counseled about the ways one can prevent epilepsy. The booklet was translated to the local language and was distributed. The matter in English as well as Telugu was put up in flex and poster form. They were displayed in strategic locations in the hospitals, cafeteria, mess, Auto stands etc.

A free epilepsy camp was organized on 14th of November and EEG was done for patients on concessional rates. A painting competition for children with epilepsy was conducted on the 16th of November. Children participated with enthusiasm and prizes were distributed to the winning participants.

A CME programme for the Medical officers from Nellore was held on the 17th of November. Medical officers of Nellore district attended the teaching programme. The chief guest of the function was Dr D Suresh Kumar, District Medical Health Officer. The programme started with the welcome address by the Medical Superintendent, Dr P Narsimha Reddy who emphasized in his talk the importance of the prevention of epilepsy and conveyed to the medical officers to transmit the information to one and all. Dr Ramakrishna, Principal spoke of the magnitude of the illness and the treatment gap.

Dr D Suresh recalled the treatment in the earlier days and the myths prevailing in the villages. He appreciated the association for having organized the educational programme for PHC doctors. 98 PHC doctors attended the programme. Dr Bindu Menon, President of IEA chapter gave a talk on the diagnosis and management of epilepsy. Video of epilepsy was also shown and there was a good interaction among the audience. Dr Lokesh proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was given a good coverage by the local channels and newspapers.

As part of National Epilepsy day celebration, a school educational programme was conducted in the Gomathy International School on 21st of November. Dr Bindu enlightened them about the myths and facts of epilepsy. The teachers actively participated in the programme. A quiz competition on epilepsy was conducted for the Final MBBS, MSc Nursing and Physiotherapy students on 26th of November. There was a good response with 42 participants.
