Project CORE (Control of Rural Epilepsy): The project was initiated in August 1997. This is a free medical service to the rural population. We targeted 100 villages and conducted door to door survey and enrolled persons with epilepsy for free medical advice and medicines. All these patients were followed up regularly every month and free antiepileptic drugs were issued. After completing 6 years of uninterrupted 100% free service to over 1000 patients, we decided to stop registering new members.

For the last 3 years Phenobarbitone, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Diazepam and Sodium Valproate are available in unlimited quantity at all the Tamil Nadu PHC. We have partly shifted the drug dispensing to the local Primary Health Center and plan to shift the entire patient population to the PHC shortly. We have been continuing to offer expert advice to these patients.

Now we visit every two months and plan to concentrate more on awareness programs.
