12 Nov- A free epilepsy camp was organized at Takshila Public School, Beta Gokul, Shahjahanpur Road, Hardoi in collaboration with e chaupal of ITC. A total of 70 patients were evaluated by Dr Atul Agarwal from 9am to 3pm. Before starting,, Dr Agarwal told the gathering about all aspects of disease and answered the questions of audience. Free drugs for 3 weeks were distributed to each patient.

17th Nov- 8.30 am- Dr. Atul Agarwal spoke on epilepsy on FM All India Radio Lucknow discussing all aspects of Epilepsy, first aid, management and various myths associated with the illness. 19 Nov. 12 noon.

CMe on epilepsy was organized at Hind Institute of Medical Sciences, Barabanki. Principal HIMS welcomed the gathering which included large number of faculty members of other departments. Prof. Mam Chandra, Head of Department of Medicine introduced the topic and the speakers. Dr Vimlesh Kumar Varma, Asstt. Prof. Neurplogy, gave a lecture on epilepsy, its epidemiology, classification, investigations and general guidelines for management.

He made it interesting with videos of different types of epilepsies. epilepsy Quiz was presented for undergraduate students.

Dr Atul Agarwal presented 100 interesting questions related to epilepsy to audience in KBC style. The first, second and third prizes were given to Gaurav Vats, Kshitiz Chaurasia & Ms Vijeta respectively.

Many consolation prizes were given & participation certificates were given to all. (Supported by Abbott Pharmaceuticals).

16 Nov- 3pm . Painting competition for children with epilepsy was organized at Vivekanand Hospital, Lucknow by Dr Kiran Zutshi, consultant Paediatrician; in which 36 children participated. The prizes were distributed by the chief guest swami Shri Para Roopanand ji Maharaj of Ram Krishna Mission, Lucknow (provided by Abbott Pharma). All the participants were also given coloring books, tiffin boxes and participation certificates. After the competition Public awareness lectures were given by various specialists. Dr Mohan assisted Dr Zutshi.





17 th Nov- 8 am- Dr. Atul Agarwal spoke on Epilepsy on All India Radio Lucknow in ‘Aapka swasthya’ discussing all aspects of Epilepsy, first aid, management and various myths associated with the illness .



10 am- A public awareness and patient education programme was organised by Dr. Rakesh Shukla (Professor in Neurology, KGMU) at IMA Bhawan, River Bank Colony, Lucknow from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. About 50 patients and their family members and 50 nursing students of the K.K. Institute of Nursing, participated in the programme. Dr. Atul Agarwal (Secretary, IEA UP Chapter), Dr. Vimal Kumar Paliwal (Assoc. Prof. in Neurology, SGPGIMS, Lucknow), Dr. Ajai Kumar Singh (Assoc. Prof. in Neurology, RMLIMS, Lucknow), Dr. Shameem Ahmed Ansari (Consultant Paediatrician), Dr. Sciddhartha Koonwar (Asst. Prof. in Paediatrics, KGMU) and Dr. Rakesh Shukla spoke on various aspects of epilepsy.



Dr. Rukhsana Khan (President) and Dr. Vijay Kumar (Secretary) IMA Lucknow Branch were also present on this occasion. Two short films on epilepsy “Mirgi: Sahi Gyan Sahi Samadhan”, and “Wings of Freedom” were also screened on this occasion. This was followed by an interactive question-answer session in which the patient’s queries were answered by the experts. Educational material related to epilepsy was distributed to the patients. This was followed by light refreshment. The programme was generously supported by M/S Sanofi Aventis Ltd. and received wide coverage in the print media.

20 Nov- Prof A K Thakkar Head Department of Neurology at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Gomtinagar, Lucknow started a Refractory Epilepsy Clinic from 20 th November 2013. It will involve detailed evaluation and work up of patients with refractory epilepsy and will be held every Wednesday from 12 noon till 3 PM.

On the occasion of clinic inauguration, Dr. Sangeeta Rawat, Head of the Neurology Department at KEM Hospital and Seth G S Medical College, Mumbai was the chief guest and she delivered a guest lecture on ‘Epilepsy – Yesterday and today’.



The work up of patients with refractory epilepsy will involve detailed history taking including seizure semiology and drug history with detailed examination and investigations including MRI Brain and EEG. During the initial period, there will be collaboration with the Neurology department at KEM Hospital and suitable patients who require further work up with Video EEG/ Epilepsy surgery will be referred there with due consultation of Dr. Sangeeta.

20 Nov. 10.30 am. Dr Atul Agarwal discussed about Epilepsy, its types, investigations and management with students and teachers of Adarsh Higher Secondary School, Ahimamau, Sultanpur Road Lucknow. Its Principal Shi Pradeep Misra conducted the program and made it interactive.

 





24 Nov. An Epilepsy Quiz was held for undergraduate and postgratuate students of Era Lucknow Medical College, by Prof. Ajay Kohli. Dr Atul Agarwal presented 100 interesting questions related to Epilepsy to audience in KBC style. The first & second prizes were given to Vishal Singh & Dr Sunit Maini respectively. Many consolation prizes and books were given for good interaction & participation certificates were given to all. (Supported by Novartis Pharma).

01 Dec. 10.30am Dr Atul Agarwal gave a lecture on Epilepsy Management: From guidelines to practice to a gathering of 90 physicians in API-DIAS programme organized by Abbott Pharma.

17 Nov 2012: The film "Mirgi" was screened to about 200 students of class VIII & IX at the CMS, Rajendra Nagar Branch in the morning between 9:00 and 10:00 AM. It was followed by a lecture by Prof Rakesh Shukla about Epilepsy, its causes, first aid, various myths associated with illness



Painting competition for children with epilepsy was organized by Dr Kiran Zutshi in afternoon at Vivekanand Hospital, Lucknow in which 40 children participated.



The prizes were distributed by the chief guest swami Shri Para Roopanand ji Maharaj of Ram Krishna Mission, Lucknow (provided by Abbott Pharma). All the participants were also given coloring books, Tiffin boxes and participation certificates. After the competition Public awareness lectures were given by various specialists.



Dr. A K Pandey discussed about various types of epileptic fits & importance to recognize them by details of history to be obtained from patient, family members & other eye witnesses. Dr H K Pandey discussed issues related with Febrile seizures. Dr Atul Agarwal elaborated on management issues, first aid, do's & don'ts and other precautions to be observed by patients. Dr Madhumita Bose told the gathering about various tests done sometime, their role in management & other related issues. The audience consisted of children and their parents and questions were answered by experts.

A debate was organised on " Newer AEDs are better than older AEDs" at the IMA Bhawan Lucknow in the evening between 7:30 to 9:30 PM.



The session was chaired by Dr UK Misra, Prof. & Head of Neurology, SGPGIMS Lucknow and Dr OP Tiwari, President, IMA Lucknow Branch and was attended by about 60 people including members of IMA, faculty members and residents of KGMU, RMLIMS and practicing physicians. Dr AK Thackar, Prof of Neurology, BRD Medical College Gorakhpur spoke against the motion while Dr Navneet Kumar, Principal & Dean, and Director Prof & Head of Neurology, GSVM Medical College Kanpur spoke in favour. The session was ably moderated by Dr Rakesh Shukla, Prof of Neurology; who introduced the subject while Dr UK Misra gave the take-home message.

18 Nov. Dr. Atul Agarwal spoke on FM Radio Mirchi channel Lucknow; discussing myths associated with Epilepsy and first aid in case of someone having fit. The message was aired throughout the day many times.

21 Nov. 9-10am Dr Atul Agarwal told students and teachers of Saraswati Vidya Mandir Inter College, Barabanki about Epilepsy, its causes, first aid, and various myths associated with illness.



) It was a interactive session where all types of questions by students & teachers were answered by Dr Agarwal

An Epilepsy camp was organized at District Hospital, Barabanki with the help of Abbot Pharma from 10 am to 12.30pm.

6th Dec: The film "Mirgi", Sahi Gyan Sahi Samadhan, produced by the 18th IEC Trust, were shown to the IIIrd year nursing students of the school of nursing, King George's Medical University Lucknow on Thursday 6th Dec, 2012 at the Centenary Hospital. It was followed by interactive session in which the "Do's and don'ts in epilepsy" were emphasized by Dr. Rakesh Shukla, Professor of Neurology, followed by question answer session. The participants were provided light refreshment by Ms UCB Pharma.

EPILEPSY DAY CELEBRATIONS: Report of Activities Nov. 2009


  1. 14 Nov, 8am. Dr Atul Agarwal told students and teachers of "Parvati Devi Public High School" about Epilepsy, its causes, first aid, various myths associated with illness. It was an interactive program presided by Principal of school.



  2. 15 Nov. Dr Atul Agarwal was invited at local daily Hindi newspaper 'Dainik Jagran' in program Hello Doctor where he answered phone calls of persons on all aspects of epilepsy from 1 to 2pm.
  3. 15 Nov. Prof Rakesh Shukla spoke on Epilepsy on FM channel Lucknow from 2 to 3pm and answered the questions of audience.
  4. 15 Nov. A CME on "Prevention of Epilepsy" was organized on Sunday 15th November 2009 at the IMA Hall, River Bank Colony, Lucknow in the evening. President IMA Lucknow Dr Sunita Tewari welcomed the guests. Convener of the CME Prof Rakesh Shukla introduced the theme and emphasized the need to make efforts to prevent Epilepsy by taking some simple precautions. Dr. Atul Agarwal discussed the life cycle of Taenia solium & the way Cysticercosis infect & affect people which could be prevented by improving hygiene. Dr. Rajesh Verma elaborated upon prevention of Epilepsy due to Birth Injuries. Dr. Maneesh Kumar Singh presented bad state of Indian roads & emphasized on prevention of accidents & head trauma for prevention of epilepsy due to it. The CME was attended by a large number of doctors. Secretary IMA Lucknow Dr MA Khan proposed the vote of thanks. (Supported by Sun Pharma)






  5. 16 Nov. "Conquer Epilepsy" an interactive program for patients, their relatives & caregivers and society was organized at CSM Medical University. It was presided by Vice Chancellor Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal who emphasized on need of such programs to spread awareness about the illness & remove stigmas associated with illness. The program was started with lighting the lamp. Artists of Kadambari group performed a drama skit on Epilepsy. The chief guest of function Prof Devika Nag told the gathering Do's & Don'ts if someone develops a epileptic fit. Prof RK Garg gave the statistics of epilepsy while Prof Rakesh Shukla elaborated on what epilepsy means and discussed its types. Prof Rajesh Varma pointed to all what can cause epilepsy. Special emphasis was given on preventable causes like Cysticercosis. Dr Atul Agarwal emphasized on regularity of treatment, ensuring adequate night sleep & avoiding precipitating factors. Dr Maneesh K Singh discussed about importance of details of fits in history taking and investigations done in patients of epilepsy. Prof Yogesh Govil discussed about Febrile seizures and other issues like schooling in children with epilepsy. Prof Prabhat Sitholey told the gathering that sometime excessive stress in a person may result in unconsciousness & fit like situation which is exactly not seizure. Many patients with epilepsy have anxiety & depression which is to be discussed & treated. Two patients Mr. Subodh Dhawan of Sitapur & Mr. Randeep Singh of Lucknow told about their long personal struggle against epilepsy which both have won now. Both were successfully operated at SCTIMST Trivandrum many years ago and have been seizure free since then. Disease related literature was distributed by UCB Pharma which supported the program. The event was widely reported in the media next day multiplying the usefulness of the program.
  6. 16 Nov. AIR Lucknow aired a 30 minute talk by Dr Atul Agarwal on various aspects of Epilepsy at 8.10pm.










  7. 17 Nov. News paper 'Dainik Jagran' published half page article which contained Q&A of 'Hello Doctor' program on 15 Nov and other information on Epilepsy.

Dr. Hem Pandey told about various causes of epilepsy with emphasis on infective causes like cysticercosis and its prevention. Dr. Atul Agarwal discussed various types of epileptic fits & importance to recognize them by details of history to be obtained from patient, family members & other eye witnesses. Dr Niranjan K Singh elaborated on management issues, first aid, do's & don't and other precautions to be observed by a patient. Dr Madhumita Bose discussed the benign nature of Febrile seizure & other paediatric issues. The audience consisting of children, their parents and others asked many questions which were answered by experts.



  9. 19 Nov. An Epilepsy Quiz was held for undergraduate students of CSM Medical University at Pharma Lecture theatre. Dr Atul Agarwal presented 60 interesting questions. The first 3 prizes were given to Shivangi Sachan, Rahul Dixit & Sarita Devi. Participation certificates were given to all. (Supported by Novartis Pharma).
  10. 21 Nov. A CME on Pediatric Neurology was organized by Dr Kiran Zutschi of Deptt of Pediatrics, Vivekanand Hospital. Dr J Kalita discussed the interpretation of Pediatric EEG. Col KS Rana discussed management of convulsing child. Prof Satinder Aneja elaborated on how to treat difficult to treat epilepsy.
  11. 23 Nov. Foundation day function & CME was organized by Prof Rashmi Kumar, Head of Pediatrics, CSMMU. Prof PK Misra oration on "Neurocysticercosis: The Indian experience" was delivered by Prof Veena Kalra, New Delhi. Prof NL Sharma oration on "Controversies in Febrile Seizures" was delivered by Dr Rajiv R Varma, Pittsburgh, USA.
